Biography

Barbarelli is a multi-talented Afro-peripheral and non-binary artist from São Paulo, Brazil, who has been active in the music scene since at least 2006. Their artistic journey began with involvement in punk rock bands during adolescence, evolving into a more mature and elaborate electro-pop sound. Barbarelli is known for composing all of their own lyrics, drawing inspiration from personal "divas" such as Amy Winehouse, Melissa Auf Der Maur, Fiona Apple, and Lauryn Hill, while also finding sonic power in artists like Michael Jackson and Madonna, and bands like Silverchair and The Beatles. They blend these influences with elements of hip-hop, fidget house, maximal, Dutch house, and funk carioca.

Before establishing their solo career, Barbarelli was part of the electro-funk project "Bonde das Impostora" from 2006 to 2008, which later transformed into the duo "Impostora." This period solidified their desire to pursue a career as a singer, songwriter, and performer more seriously. The "Barbarelli Project" debuted in July 2008 in Fortaleza, with early tracks produced by Leco Jucá and David Farofa. Barbarelli has also collaborated with artists like Edu K and Disco Killah. As a DJ, Barbarelli's career began organically in Curitiba with the "Tisco" party, which aimed to play "everything you like and don't tell anyone." Their extensive collection of 80s, 90s, and trash hits led them to DJing, and they have since performed in various cities across Brazil, often combining DJ sets with live pocket shows.

In recent years, Barbarelli has focused on intimate and romantic repertoires, performing pocket shows that feature original songs and reinterpretations. Their musicality spans MPB, R&B, alternative rock, and contemporary production. In 2022, they released their debut EP, "Barbarelli," featuring singles like "Vem que vem" and "Vai se lascar." A new phase began in 2025 with the single "Acho Graça," a precursor to their upcoming debut album. Barbarelli's performances are often integrated with other art forms, such as gastronomy, creating a unique cultural experience for the audience. They have shared stages with notable Brazilian artists like Thalma de Freitas and Saulo Duarte.
