Biography

Bebeto Alves, stage name of Luís Alberto Nunes Alves, was a Brazilian singer and songwriter born in Uruguaiana and based in Porto Alegre. He is widely recognized as one of the great exponents of Música Popular Gaúcha from the 1980s onwards, standing out for his pioneering work in world music in Rio Grande do Sul by incorporating elements of traditional rhythms such as milongas, ranchos and toadas into the sounds of rock, pop, reggae and electronic music. Throughout his career, he was a member of groups such as Utopia and Los 3Plantados, in addition to participating in notable collective projects, such as the album Paralelo 30 and the Juntos project, alongside names like Totonho Villeroy, Nelson Coelho de Castro and Gelson Oliveira.

In addition to his prolific solo career which yielded dozens of albums, such as Notícia Urgente and Blackbagualnegovéio, Bebeto played an important role as a cultural manager, directing the State Institute of Music of Rio Grande do Sul and the Funarte Music Center. His work engaged in a dialogue with various exponents of regional and national culture, leaving an indelible legacy in the renewal of popular song from Rio Grande do Sul. The artist passed away in November 2022, in Porto Alegre, following complications arising from lung cancer.
