Biography

Benil dos Santos, artistically known as Benil Santos, was a multifaceted Brazilian artist born in Cabo Frio, Rio de Janeiro, on November 20, 1931. His career spanned several areas of music and radio, establishing him as a songwriter, radio broadcaster, music producer, and artist manager. He began his journey in radio in Minas Gerais, where, at age 15, he was already winning awards as a radio announcer. His move to Rio de Janeiro marked a turning point, with stints at major stations such as Rádio Mauá and Rádio Mayrink Veiga, where he also worked as a producer and artistic director.

As a songwriter, Benil Santos left an expressive legacy, with more than 100 of his works recorded by great names in Brazilian music. His partnerships with Raul Sampaio yielded hits such as "Lembranças", "Estou pensando em ti", and "Distância", the latter winning the Brazilian Music Festival in 1963. The versatility of his work allowed his songs to be interpreted by renowned artists such as Elizeth Cardoso, Nelson Gonçalves, Maria Bethânia, and Toquinho, among many others, demonstrating the breadth of his reach in the musical scene.

In addition to his work as a songwriter and radio broadcaster, Benil Santos also stood out as a music producer and artist manager. He was artistic director of RGE Discos for seven years, a period during which he became an influential figure in the recording industry. He produced memorable shows, such as "Brasileiro profissão esperança" with Clara Nunes and "Poeta moça e violão" with Toquinho and Vinícius de Moraes. Benil Santos passed away in Maricá, Rio de Janeiro, on September 24, 2012, at the age of 80, leaving an indelible mark on Brazilian popular music.
