Biography

Benjamin de Oliveira, born Benjamin Chaves in Pará de Minas on June 11, 1870, was a pioneering Brazilian circus performer, singer, composer, actor, and clown. Regarded as the first recognized Black clown in Brazil and the creator of the Brazilian circus-theater tradition, he escaped an abusive circus troupe in his youth and traveled extensively through the Brazilian countryside, eventually finding acclaim in Rio de Janeiro under the patronage of figures like President Floriano Peixoto.

In addition to his groundbreaking work in the circus, Oliveira was a prolific songwriter and performer, recording works for Columbia Records in 1910 and performing lundus, chulas, and modinhas accompanied by his guitar. He frequently collaborated with and performed songs by his close friend Catulo da Paixão Cearense, cementing his legacy at the intersection of traditional Brazilian folk music and theatrical performance.

Oliveira passed away in Rio de Janeiro on May 30, 1954, leaving behind an enduring cultural legacy that has since been celebrated by historians, theater artists, and samba schools such as Acadêmicos do Salgueiro. His multifaceted contributions to Brazilian popular culture continue to inspire generations of artists who embrace both musical expression and theatrical performance.
