Biography

Alberto de Castro Guedes, known professionally as Beto Guedes, is a prominent Brazilian singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist. Born in Montes Claros, Minas Gerais, he grew up surrounded by music as the son of composer and musician Godofredo Guedes. Influenced heavily by 1960s rock, traditional choro, and the rich musical traditions of Minas Gerais, Guedes began playing in bands during his adolescence and quickly established himself as a vital creative force in the Brazilian music scene.

Guedes gained widespread recognition as a key participant in the legendary Clube da Esquina movement alongside artists such as Milton Nascimento and Lô Borges. His contributions to the landmark albums Clube da Esquina I and II helped project contemporary Minas Gerais composers onto the national stage. In 1977, he launched his successful solo career with the critically and commercially acclaimed LP A Página do Relâmpago Elétrico, followed by enduring hits like Amor de Índio and Sol de Primavera, which cemented his status as a master songwriter.

Throughout his decades-long career, Guedes has collaborated with numerous notable Brazilian artists, including Caetano Veloso, Ronaldo Bastos, and Tavinho Moura, writing timeless songs that have become classics of MPB. He has released a rich catalog of albums and live DVDs, such as Alma de Borracha and Outros Clássicos, while continuing to tour and perform across Brazil with his band, featuring his son Ian Guedes.
