Biography

Biliu de Campina, born Severino Xavier de Souza, was a traditional Brazilian singer, songwriter, and lawyer originating from Campina Grande, Paraíba. Although he graduated with a degree in law from the State University of Paraíba, he chose to pursue a career in music in 1978, dedicating his life to preserving and celebrating the roots of forró. Heavily influenced by legends like Jackson do Pandeiro, he became a beloved cultural icon and landmark of his hometown, known for his charismatic presence and humorous double entendres in his lyrics.

Throughout his career, Biliu released several independent albums, including Tributo a Jackson e Rosil, Forró O Ano Inteiro, Matéria Paga, Do Jeito Que O Diabo Gosta, Forrobodologia, and Diga Sim A Biliu de Campina. He fiercely criticized modern commercial subgenres such as electronic forró, choosing instead to stay true to the authentic swing and rhythmic essence of traditional northeastern music. Preferring a localized career over the struggles of the southeastern mainstream market, he remained a steadfast guardian of regional culture until his passing.

Biliu passed away on July 8, 2024, in Campina Grande, following complications from a fall and subsequent respiratory and cardiac issues. His legacy endures as a vital reference point for traditional forró enthusiasts and a symbol of northeastern artistic pride, sharing artistic DNA with other greats of the genre like Rosil Cavalcanti.
