Biography
Billy Blanco, artistic name of William Blanco Abrunhosa Trindade, was born in Belém do Pará in 1924 and built a multifaceted career as an architect, writer, and one of the most important composers of Brazilian popular music. Moving to the Southeast to study Architecture, he stood out in the musical scene for his unique style of syncopated samba, which incorporated elaborate lyrics, urban chronicles, and doses of humor. His original production and innovative partnerships helped shape the sound that preceded Bossa Nova, uniting harmonic sophistication with the reality of daily Brazilian life.
Throughout his career, Blanco collaborated with great names of our culture, such as Tom Jobim, with whom he created the celebrated "Sinfonia do Rio de Janeiro", and Baden Powell, in addition to composing alongside João Gilberto. His works were interpreted by countless icons of the golden age of radio and MPB, including Elis Regina, Dick Farney, Elizeth Cardoso, and Inezita Barroso, the latter responsible for immortalizing the classic "Estatutos da Gafieira".
In addition to his individual songs, Billy Blanco dedicated years of work to grandiose popular suites, such as the "Sinfonia Paulistana", released in 1974 with striking arrangements and guest performances. Recognized for his musical intelligence and sharp ability to observe urban centers, he left an indelible legacy that spanned generations before his passing in 2011, consolidating himself as one of the great masters of samba and national song.
