Biography

Ubirajara Penacho dos Reis, known as Bira, was a renowned Brazilian bassist and musician, born in Salvador, Bahia, on September 5, 1934. His musical career was marked by a long and fruitful trajectory, which led him to become a beloved and recognized figure in the Brazilian music scene. Bira became widely known for his participation in the "Sexteto do Jô", the band that accompanied host Jô Soares on his television shows, such as "Jô Soares Onze e Meia" and "Programa do Jô". His presence on the show, especially his contagious and loud laugh, captivated the audience and made him an unforgettable figure for many generations.

In addition to his work on television, Bira was a talented and versatile musician, with a deep connection to the electric bass. His skill on the instrument and his charismatic personality led him to collaborate with various artists and participate in numerous musical projects throughout his career. He was self-taught and developed his affinity for the bass during his early steps as a musician, still at the Federal University of Bahia. His trajectory consolidated him as one of the most beloved and respected musicians of his generation.

Bira passed away on December 22, 2019, at the age of 85, in São Paulo, following complications from a stroke. His death caused commotion and various tributes from fellow professionals, friends, and fans, who lamented the loss of such a special artist.
