Biography
Bixiga 70 is a Brazilian musical group founded in São Paulo in 2010, whose name originated from the address of Traquitana Studio, located at Treze de Maio street, number 70, in the traditional Bixiga neighborhood. The band's sound stands out for fusing strands of afrobeat music, African and Latin rhythms, jazz, and influences from Brazilian culture, building a plural and energetic instrumental identity.
Throughout its trajectory, the group has established itself in the independent scene with the release of critically acclaimed works, such as their first self-titled albums from 2011 and 2013, as well as the album Quebra Cabeça, recognized by critic associations. The collective has also taken its music to various prominent international stages, participating in festivals in Europe and Africa, and receiving awards such as the Brazilian Music Award in the revelation category.
The group's work dialogues with various historical references of national and international music, closely conversing with the work of icons like Gilberto Gil, Hermeto Pascoal, Itamar Assumpção, and Chico Science. Through its robust instrumental formation, Bixiga 70 keeps alive a rich tradition of sonic experimentation that reveres both the Afro-Brazilian heritage and the legacy of artists like Fela Kuti and Mulatu Astatke.
