Biography

Black Cube SP is a Brazilian musical project that emerged from the vibrant experimental music scene in São Paulo. The group is an extension of the São Paulo Underground trio, which features Rob Mazurek on cornet and electronics, Guilherme Granado on keyboards and samplers, and Mauricio Takara on drums and electronics. Black Cube SP adds Thomas Rohrer, a master of the rabeca (a traditional Brazilian bowed string instrument), to this core lineup.

The music of Black Cube SP is characterized by its fusion of electronic elements with Tropicália, a Brazilian artistic movement from the 1960s known for its innovative blend of traditional Brazilian music with rock and psychedelic influences. Their sound is described as having glistening sonic textures, beautiful melodies, and an expansive improvisational palette, creating a unique and engaging listening experience. The project's debut album, "Return the Tides: Ascension Suite and Holy Ghost," was conceived by Mazurek as a personal and spiritual journey following the death of his mother.

Black Cube SP has gained recognition for its avant-garde approach, combining elements of jazz expressionism, electronic experimentation, and hypnotic Tropicália rhythms with a profound spirituality. The group has performed live, including their US debut, and their music has been praised for its compelling and cathartic nature. They are associated with the experimental music label Cuneiform Records, which released their debut album.
