Biography

Black Future is an influential underground Brazilian band formed in Rio de Janeiro during the 1980s. The group's original lineup featured vocalists Márcio Bandeira (known as Satanésio) and Lui, alongside Carlos Antonio Mattos (Tantão) on keyboards and electronic drums, Edinho on guitar, and Olmar Jr. on bass. Blending diverse influences such as post-punk, no wave, hip hop, and samba, they carved a unique niche in the alternative music scene. Their distinctive sound drew comparisons to other experimental acts of the era, laying groundwork for future underground explorations in Brazil.

In 1988, the band released their sole full-length album, Eu Sou o Rio, produced by Thomas Pappon of Fellini. The recording featured guest appearances by notable figures including Alex Antunes, Biba, Edu K of De Falla, poet Chacal, Edgar Scandurra, and Paulo Miklos. Released through the Plug label by BMG, the record initially suffered from poor sales and critical misunderstanding, remaining out of print for years. However, its uncompromising aesthetic eventually earned it a cult following among musicians and fans alike, inspiring later underground acts such as Planet Hemp.

Decades after their initial activity, the band's legacy experienced a significant resurgence. In 2005, their track Eu Sou o Rio was featured on the compilation Não Wave, released by Man Recordings, introducing their pioneering sound to a new generation of listeners. A biographical documentary titled Black Future, Eu Sou o Rio, directed by Paulo Severo, was released in 2023 to celebrate their enduring impact. Demonstrating their continued relevance, the group returned in 2024 with a new single, Eu Quero Tocar a Lapa, cementing their legendary status in Brazilian underground music.
