Biography
Blitz is a Brazilian rock band formed in 1981 in Rio de Janeiro, considered one of the precursors of national rock and the 1980s "BRock" movement. The band emerged from musical gatherings between members of the theatrical group "Asdrúbal Trouxe o Trombone" and musicians who accompanied the singer Marina. The original lineup featured Evandro Mesquita (vocals, acoustic guitar, and harmonica), Ricardo Barreto (guitar), Lobão (drums), Antônio Pedro Fortuna (bass), William "Billy" Forghieri (keyboards), Fernanda Abreu (backing vocals), and Márcia Bulcão (backing vocals). The name "Blitz" came about due to the constant police stops the musicians faced on their way to rehearsals.
The massive success of Blitz began in 1982 with the release of the single "Você Não Soube Me Amar", which sold over 100,000 copies in three months and became a national hit. Their first album, "As Aventuras da Blitz" (1982), consolidated the band as a mass phenomenon, selling over 1 million copies and featuring other hits such as "A Dois Passos do Paraíso" and "Mais Uma de Amor (Geme Geme)". The band stood out for its blend of rock, pop, theater, and humor, with lyrics that addressed everyday life and created humorous narratives, alongside theatrical performances and innovative costumes. Blitz also faced censorship during the military regime, with parts of their songs being banned, which, paradoxically, increased the group's curiosity and popularity.
Throughout its career, Blitz has released several studio and live albums, and despite some breakups and lineup changes, the band has remained active, with Evandro Mesquita and Billy Forghieri as long-standing remaining members. In 2017, the album "Aventuras II" was nominated for the Latin Grammy Award for Best Portuguese Language Rock or Alternative Album. Blitz is recognized for paving the way for Brazilian rock to reach the masses and for shaping the soundtrack of a generation, maintaining its legacy of humor, irreverence, and high spirits for over four decades.
