Biography

Bruno Rian, born Bruno Morgado Botelho on May 28, 1981, is a Brazilian bandolim (mandolin) player and composer specializing in choro music. He is the son of the renowned bandolim player Déo Rian. Bruno Rian began his musical journey at the tender age of three, initially playing the pandeiro (tambourine). By age eight, he transitioned to the cavaquinho, tuned like a bandolim, and at ten, he fully embraced the bandolim, an instrument for which he would become known.

His professional career took flight in 1996 when, at just 15 years old, he released his debut album, "Choro em Família," a collaboration with his father, Déo Rian. This album featured tracks like "Roceira," "Olympia," "Adelina," "Buliçoso," "Coroa de Espinhos," "Homenagem ao 7 Cordas," and "Um Abraço em Severino." In the same year, he became a member of Grupo Sarau, a choro ensemble that hosted weekly jam sessions with various guest musicians in Rio de Janeiro from 1997 to 2007. The group released the album "Cordas Novas" in 1999, which included unreleased compositions by Jacob do Bandolim and Déo Rian, with the title track being a dedication to Bruno Rian by Pedro Amorim.

Bruno Rian's dedication to choro music is further evidenced by his involvement in projects such as "Os Bambas do Bandolim" (1998), a compilation featuring prominent bandolim players, and "Fundamental - Choro" (2015), an album that includes his participation alongside other notable choro musicians. He was also a co-founder of the Instituto Jacob do Bandolim. His performances have graced various stages, including collaborations with artists like Joel Nascimento and participation in events celebrating choro music.
