Biography

Tomás Cavalcante da Silva, known artistically as Cachimbinho, was a renowned Brazilian singer and songwriter, born in Guarabira, Paraíba, on April 6, 1935. His musical career began early, at the age of 13, in 1948, when he performed on rural properties and political rallies, even getting arrested for singing emboladas in a public square. This passion for music led him to seek opportunities in Rio de Janeiro around the 1960s, where he found support from big names like Luiz Gonzaga and Jackson do Pandeiro, who helped him in his artistic journey.

Cachimbinho is widely recognized as one of the great masters of coco de embolada, a traditional musical genre from Northeastern Brazil. Throughout his career, he participated in several collective LPs and released albums with musical partners, highlighting his partnership with Geraldo Mouzinho. Together, they recorded albums such as "De… Repente Acontece" (1977) and "Cachimbinho e Livardo Alves com seu Grupo Peneira – Com muito amor e pimenta" (1991), where they performed cocos written by themselves and other composers.

His contribution to Brazilian popular music was marked by the preservation and promotion of coco de embolada, bringing this art to different audiences and generations. Cachimbinho was awarded the Augusto dos Anjos Medal, a recognition of his value as an artist and master of the arts. His passing on November 25, 2022 left an important legacy for Northeastern culture and Brazilian music as a whole, being remembered for his authenticity and mastery of coco de embolada.
