Biography
Mozart Camargo Guarnieri was a prominent Brazilian classical composer, conductor, and teacher, widely recognized as one of the most significant musical figures in the Americas alongside Heitor Villa-Lobos. Born in Tietê, São Paulo, he began his musical journey at home, influenced by his musically inclined parents, and later studied piano and composition under mentors such as Lamberto Baldi. A turning point in his intellectual and artistic development occurred in 1928 when he met the modernist writer Mário de Andrade, who became his close friend, mentor, and collaborator on various vocal and operatic works, including the opera Pedro Malazarte.
Throughout his prolific career spanning over seven decades, Guarnieri composed more than 700 works and established himself as a leading voice of Brazilian musical nationalism. He studied in Paris under Charles Koechlin and later gained international acclaim, with his compositions performed by major orchestras and conductors such as Leonard Bernstein. As an educator and cultural leader, he directed the São Paulo Municipal Symphonic Orchestra and the University of São Paulo Symphony Orchestra, and founded the influential Paulista School of composition, mentoring prominent musicians like Osvaldo Lacerda and Marlos Nobre. His enduring legacy is preserved at the Institute of Brazilian Studies at the University of São Paulo.
