Biography

Camisa de Vênus is a Brazilian rock band formed in Salvador, Bahia, in 1980. The band stood out in the 1980s music scene for its raw sound, controversial and irreverent lyrics, which frequently addressed social, political, and moral criticisms of the era. The band's name, a popular Brazilian expression, was a deliberate choice to generate controversy and shock the public, reflecting the group's rebellious attitude.

The group was founded by Marcelo Nova (vocals) and Robério Santana (bass), with the participation of Karl Hummel (guitar), Gustavo Mullem (drums), and Eugênio Soares (lead guitar). After a few initial performances, Eugênio Soares left the band, and Gustavo Mullem took over lead guitar, with Aldo Machado joining on drums. The band released their first single, "Controle Total"/"Meu Primo Zé", in 1982, and their debut album, "Camisa de Vênus", in 1983, via Som Livre. Songs like "Bete Morreu" and "Eu Não Matei Joana D'Arc" became hits, despite some of them facing censorship issues.

Throughout their career, Camisa de Vênus underwent several line-up changes and reunions, always maintaining their rock 'n' roll identity with influences from punk rock and rockabilly. The band is recognized for its importance in the history of Brazilian rock, especially for its critical stance and influence on later generations of musicians. Marcelo Nova, the vocalist and main lyricist, also played an important role in Raul Seixas's career during the artist's final years.
