Biography

Antônio Candeia Filho, known simply as Candeia, was a towering figure in Brazilian samba, celebrated as a singer, composer, and staunch defender of traditional Afro-Brazilian culture. Born in Rio de Janeiro, he grew up immersed in the bohemian musical circles of Oswaldo Cruz, where his father played flute in choro and samba gatherings. Deeply connected to the roots of Portela—one of Rio's most traditional samba schools—Candeia began composing at a young age, penning historic sambas enredo such as "Seis datas magnas" in 1953.

Alongside his musical pursuits, Candeia pursued a career as a civil police investigator in Rio de Janeiro. However, his life took a dramatic turn in 1965 when a traffic dispute resulted in a gunshot wound to his spinal cord, leaving him permanently paralyzed from the waist down and confined to a wheelchair. Forced into early retirement from the police force, he sank into a deep depression before finding renewed purpose and emotional release through music. His subsequent work reflected a profound lyrical and social maturity, addressing his new physical reality and championing traditional acoustic samba against the commercialization of Carnival.

During the 1970s, Candeia released influential solo albums like Candeia (1970) and Raiz (1971), and became a vital proponent of the partido-alto style. Disillusioned with the changing direction of Portela, he co-founded the Quilombo samba school in 1975 to preserve authentic cultural traditions. He also collaborated closely with fellow masters of the genre such as Nelson Cavaquinho, Elton Medeiros, and Paulinho da Viola. Candeia passed away in November 1978 due to kidney complications, leaving behind a legacy as one of the most uncompromising and revered intellectuals in the history of samba.
