Biography
Carlos de Campos Vergueiro, known artistically as Carlinhos Vergueiro, was born in São Paulo on March 27, 1952. The son of actor Carlos Vergueiro and actress and museologist Zilah Maria Fontainha de Campos Vergueiro, he had early contact with music, studying piano with his grandfather Guilherme Fontainha and performing concerts during his childhood. Before devoting himself entirely to his artistic career, he worked at Bovespa, a period during which he released his first singles in 1973, culminating in the arrival of his debut album Brecha the following year.
Throughout his career, Vergueiro established himself as a prolific songwriter with over 150 recorded songs and partnerships with major names in Brazilian music, such as Vinicius de Moraes, Chico Buarque, Toquinho, Adoniran Barbosa, and Paulinho da Viola. His versatility allowed him to explore waltzes, boleros, and, above all, samba, the genre that marked his acclaim. Among his most celebrated works are compositions like "Torresmo à Milanesa", made in partnership with Adoniran Barbosa, and "Como um Ladrão", winner of Rede Globo's Festival Abertura in 1975.
In addition to his original output, he actively worked as a music producer on albums by exponents such as Geraldo Filme and Nelson Cavaquinho, as well as participating in important projects and performances alongside icons like Cartola, Caetano Veloso, Djavan, and Beth Carvalho. His discography spans dozens of albums and special projects dedicated to the preservation and celebration of Brazilian popular culture, reaffirming his fundamental role in the history of samba and MPB.
