Biography
Carlos Galhardo, stage name of Catello Carlos Guagliardi, was born in Buenos Aires on April 24, 1913, and established himself as one of the greatest icons of the Radio Era in Brazil. The son of Italian immigrants, he moved to Rio de Janeiro as a child, where he initially worked as a tailor before beginning his artistic career in the 1930s. Known by titles such as "King of the Record" and "The King of the Waltz," the singer recorded hundreds of 78 rpm records throughout his career, standing out not only for his romantic interpretations and waltzes, but also for a vast repertoire dedicated to festivities and carnival marches.
His breakthrough to national prominence occurred after being heard at musical gatherings frequented by great names of the era, such as Francisco Alves and Mário Reis. Throughout his long-standing partnership with the RCA Victor record label, Galhardo interpreted striking hits by composers like Assis Valente, Lamartine Babo, and Ataulfo Alves, in addition to sharing recordings and stages with renowned artists like Carmen Miranda and Dalva de Oliveira. His unmistakable voice echoed through various radio stations of national significance and also left its mark on Brazilian cinema in chanchadas and musicals of the golden age.
In addition to his interpretive legacy, Carlos Galhardo played a fundamental role in defending artists' rights, eventually serving as president of Socimpro and fighting for legal regulations to guarantee the recording and performance rights of Brazilian interpreters. The singer passed away on July 25, 1985, in Rio de Janeiro, leaving behind a monumental body of work composed of hundreds of recordings that immortalized him alongside legends such as Orlando Silva, Vicente Celestino, and Sílvio Caldas.
