Biography

Carlos Lyra was a seminal Brazilian composer, singer, and guitarist who stood as one of the fundamental pillars of the Bossa Nova movement. Born in Rio de Janeiro in 1933, he began his musical journey in the 1950s, co-founding a guitar academy with Roberto Menescal that mentored future stars like Nara Leão and Edu Lobo. While some of his peers were heavily influenced by North American jazz, Lyra championed a "nationalist" approach to Bossa Nova, advocating for a deeper connection to the rhythmic roots of traditional samba and engaging in the social and political issues of his time through the Centro Popular de Cultura (CPC).

Throughout his prolific career, Lyra collaborated with legendary figures, most notably the poet Vinícius de Moraes, with whom he wrote enduring classics such as "Você e Eu," "Coisa mais Linda," and "Minha Namorada." His compositions were also popularized by the definitive voice of the genre, João Gilberto. Lyra's work bridged the gap between the sophisticated urban sound of the Rio middle class and the traditional samba of the hills, as seen in his efforts to introduce sambistas like Zé Keti and Cartola to the Bossa Nova audience.

Following the 1964 military coup, Lyra spent years in exile in Mexico and the United States, performing with jazz luminaries like Stan Getz before returning to Brazil in 1971. He remained an active and revered figure in Brazilian music for over six decades, releasing his final album of original material, "Além da Bossa," in 2019 to celebrate his 65-year career. He passed away in Rio de Janeiro in December 2023, leaving behind a legacy as one of the most sophisticated melodists in the history of MPB.
