Biography
Carmen Barbosa was born in the Catumbi neighborhood in Rio de Janeiro, on September 4, 1912, into a family with six sisters. From an early age she showed artistic talent, although she was averse to publicity and media exposure. With the encouragement of her renowned friend and musician Benedito Lacerda, she entered the recording scene and achieved national success right in her first ventures, such as the recording of the classic "Quando Lembrares Deste Amor", released in 1936.
Throughout her career, the singer recorded several 78 rpm records for important labels such as Columbia, Victor, and Odeon, interpreting traditional genres of Brazilian popular music alongside great names of the era. Her striking voice and interpretive style consolidated her as one of the expressive voices of Brazilian radio during the 1930s, sharing public appreciation with contemporaries of the Radio Era.
The artist's career was tragically cut short by health problems resulting from diabetes, a fragile condition that led to the amputation of one of her legs and, ultimately, to her passing on September 3, 1942, exactly one day before turning thirty years of age. Despite her short time in the artistic world, Carmen Barbosa left a representative recording legacy of the golden age of popular song in the country.
