Carmen Costa, born Carmelita Madriaga in Trajano de Moraes, Rio de Janeiro, was a celebrated Brazilian singer and songwriter who left an indelible mark on the golden age of Brazilian radio and popular music. Moving to Rio de Janeiro at a young age, she worked as a domestic employee for the legendary singer Francisco Alves, who discovered her musical talent after hearing her sing at a party attended by figures like Carmen Miranda. Encouraged to pursue a career, she triumphed as a contestant on Ary Barroso's radio program and soon established herself as a prominent professional artist, frequently collaborating with composer and singer Henricão.

Throughout her prolific career, Carmen Costa recorded numerous hits that defined mid-century Brazilian music, including the immensely popular "Está Chegando a Hora," "Cachaça não é água," and "Eu sou a outra." Her rich discography traversed samba, samba-canção, and traditional popular genres, working alongside notable musical figures such as Mirabeau Pinheiro, Paulo Vanzolini, and Elymar Santos. She also embraced the cultural shifts of her time, later in life performing with modern icons like Gilberto Gil and being officially recognized as a cultural heritage of Brazil by the Municipality of Rio de Janeiro in 2003.

As a revered member of the legendary generation of "cantoras do rádio" (radio singers), Carmen maintained an active presence in Brazilian musical history well into her later years.
