Biography

Carmen Déa Santos Braga, known artistically as Carmen Déa, was born in Vitória, Espírito Santo, on September 1, 1934. From a very young age, she showed an aptitude for singing, participating in family parties and, at the age of five, was already performing on children's programs at Rádio Canaan in her hometown. Her initial repertoire included songs by Ary Barroso, one of the great names in Brazilian music. At age 13, she moved to Rio de Janeiro, where her musical career would be consolidated.

In Rio de Janeiro, Carmen Déa participated in various talent shows on major radio stations such as Rádio Nacional and Rádio Cruzeiro do Sul. At the beginning of her career, she formed a duo with her sister, known as Irmãs Braga. Later, at age 18, she worked as a vocalist for Conjunto Bandeirantes. In 1950, she joined the vocal group As Três Marias, with which she recorded LPs of baiões and worked at Rádio Tupi. This phase also included an appearance in the film "Era uma vez um vagabundo" in 1952 and a tour across Brazil with Ary Barroso's orchestra in the 1950s.

Carmen Déa's solo career took off in 1953. In 1955, she recorded her first record with the Mocambo label, featuring the samba-canções "Não importa" and "Só resta a esperança". Throughout her career, she released more than ten records with labels such as Mocambo and Polydor, including a solo LP titled "Eu, você e mais ninguém", in the late 1950s. Her work spans genres such as samba-canção and fox-trot, and she interpreted compositions by various Brazilian artists, establishing herself as an important voice in the Brazilian popular music of her time.
