Biography

Carolina Cardoso de Menezes was a prominent Brazilian composer and pianist, born in Rio de Janeiro in 1913. She received her early musical instruction from her parents, Osvaldo Cardoso de Menezes and Dona Sinhá, before studying under Zaíra Braga, Gabriel de Almeida, and Paulino Chaves. She also had the unique opportunity to meet and take lessons from the legendary Chiquinha Gonzaga. She graduated in music theory and solfege from the Instituto Nacional de Música, further pursuing harmony studies with her cousin Newton Pádua.

Her career soared with the rise of Brazilian radio, starting in 1930 when she began performing as a staff pianist for major stations such as Rádio Tupi, Rádio Educadora, and Rádio Mayrink Veiga. Over the decades, she released numerous solo recordings, beginning with her debut in 1931, and became renowned for her daring, modern interpretations of choros and sambas. She fearlessly incorporated diverse musical styles into her repertoire, ranging from foxtrot to rock and roll, and continued to perform actively into her final years.

Throughout her prolific career, she collaborated and recorded with various notable artists, leaving an indelible mark on Brazilian instrumental music, including projects alongside Fafá Lemos and Antônio Adolfo. She passed away in Rio de Janeiro in late 1999 or 2000, leaving behind a rich discography that celebrated both traditional Brazilian genres and innovative stylistic fusions.
