Biography

Catedral is a prominent Brazilian rock band formed in 1988 in Nilópolis, Rio de Janeiro. Originally rooted in the Christian music scene, the group initially emerged from the 1st Presbyterian Church of Nilópolis and quickly became the most notable Christian rock band in Brazil during the 1990s. Known for addressing positive spiritual messages alongside themes of love and socio-political critique, the band released several successful albums through Christian labels such as Pioneira Evangélica and MK Music, including landmark works like 'Está Consumado' and 'Contra Todo Mal'.

As their career progressed, the band sought to break away from exclusive religious categorization. In 1999, Catedral signed with Warner Music Brasil, crossing over into the secular mainstream market with albums like 'Para Todo Mundo' and 'Mais do que Imaginei'. Despite facing various controversies throughout their career—including lineup changes, legal battles, and the tragic loss of guitarist José Cézar Motta in 2003—the group maintained a loyal fanbase and continued to release successful albums. Their distinct musical style, highlighted by vocalist Kim's vocal timbre, drew frequent comparisons to Renato Russo of Legião Urbana, firmly cementing Catedral's legacy in Brazilian rock history with millions of records sold.

Throughout their decades-long career, Catedral worked alongside numerous notable Brazilian musicians and producers, such as Carlos Trilha, and shared stages or collaborated with artists like Marina de Oliveira and groups like Novo Som. After celebrating their 25th anniversary and briefly hinting at a farewell, the band made a triumphant return to recording and touring, releasing new material such as 'No Mundo do Extremamente Permitido' and continuing to influence the Brazilian rock landscape.
