Biography

Catarina Maria de França Carneiro, professionally known as Cátia de França, is a prominent Brazilian singer, songwriter, and writer born in João Pessoa, Paraíba. Growing up in an intellectual yet modest household where books were prioritized, she received her early education through music from her mother, Adélia de França, and began studying classical piano at a very young age. Her artistic journey expanded during her youth in Pernambuco, where she learned to play the guitar, flute, accordion, and percussion, eventually immersing herself deeply in popular music and participating in regional festivals during the 1960s.

Throughout her extensive career, she has defied commercial pressures from major record labels, maintaining an artistic independence that connects her work to a dedicated audience. She released her landmark debut album, "20 Palavras ao Redor do Sol", in 1979, featuring collaborations with notable artists such as Sivuca and Lulu Santos, and blending northeastern musical traditions with rock elements alongside literary references to writers like João Cabral de Melo Neto. Her subsequent discography includes influential works such as "Estilhaços", "Avatar", and the 2024 Latin Grammy-nominated album "No Rastro de Catarina", cementing her enduring legacy in Brazilian popular music alongside contemporaries like Zé Ramalho, Elba Ramalho, and Chico César.

Beyond her musical achievements, Cátia de França has also ventured into literature and visual arts, authoring children's books and cultural projects celebrating northeastern heritage. Her compositions draw inspiration from renowned literary figures including Guimarães Rosa, José Lins do Rego, and Manoel de Barros, while bridging traditional regional styles with a worldly perspective. Rediscovered by new generations through digital media, she continues to be celebrated as a vital voice in Brazilian culture, receiving honors such as the Prêmio Milú Villela from Itaú Cultural.
