Biography

Catulo da Paixão Cearense was born in São Luís, Maranhão, on October 8, 1863, gaining notoriety as one of the greatest composers and poets of Brazilian popular song, known as the "Poet of the Sertão". He moved to Rio de Janeiro in his youth, where he joined the city's bohemian scene and lived among pioneering choro musicians, choosing the acoustic guitar as his main instrument of expression and contributing decisively to rehabilitating the instrument's image in high society salons.

His artistic career was marked by the creation of unforgettable modinhas and by his partnership with great names of national music, such as João Pernambuco, with whom he composed the classic "Luar do Sertão". In addition to his musical work, he worked intensely in literature and theater, publishing poetry collections and organizing popular songbooks that valued hinterland and northeastern roots, receiving the appreciation of intellectuals and critics from various generations.

Catulo passed away on May 10, 1946, in Rio de Janeiro, leaving an indelible legacy in Brazilian culture and being veiled to the sound of his own creations. The importance of his work reverberates in the history of Brazilian music, connecting the traditional lyricism of the hinterland with the development of the country's urban song, alongside fundamental figures such as Chiquinha Gonzaga and Ernesto Nazareth.
