Biography

Cecília Benevides de Carvalho Meireles was born in Rio de Janeiro in 1901 and established herself as one of the greatest poets of the Portuguese language and a central figure of Brazilian modernism. She became known for her neo-symbolist poetry, marked by themes such as the ephemerality of time and contemplative life, standing out in the second phase of modernism. In addition to her vast literary work, which included award-winning books like Viagem and Solombra, she engaged in intense activity as a journalist, painter, writer, and teacher, advocating for educational reforms and the creation of children's libraries.

Throughout her career, she was deeply connected to cultural and academic life, teaching at the Federal District University and giving courses abroad, such as at the University of Texas at Austin. Her international travels earned her worldwide recognition, including an honorary doctorate in India for her translations of Rabindranath Tagore's work, as well as important national awards like the Jabuti Prize. Her poetry engages with the country's great lyrical tradition, maintaining connections with contemporaries and intellectuals of Brazilian literature such as Manuel Bandeira and Carlos Drummond de Andrade.

Cecília Meireles passed away in her hometown in 1964, leaving an indelible legacy that has spanned generations in Brazilian literature and education. Her poetic production and cultural engagement continue to be celebrated in posthumous tributes, such as the inclusion of her effigy on banknotes and artistic adaptations of her work, exemplified by the film Os Inconfidentes, based on her acclaimed O Romanceiro da Inconfidência.
