Biography

Aderaldo Ferreira de Araújo, widely known as Cego Aderaldo, was a renowned Brazilian popular poet and singer from the state of Ceará. Born in Crato on June 24, 1878, he lost his sight at the age of 18, shortly after his father's death. It was around this time that he discovered his talent for improvising rhymes and 'repentes' (a form of sung poetry), reportedly after a dream in verses. Driven by his mother's encouragement, he began his career as a 'cantador' (singer-poet), initially performing in his hometown of Crato with a cavaquinho.

Following his mother's death, Cego Aderaldo embarked on extensive travels throughout the Northeast region of Brazil, performing in Ceará, Piauí, and Pernambuco. He gained significant fame in 1914 after a renowned 'peleja' (poetic duel) with Zé Pretinho, a fellow 'repentista' from Piauí. This event was even documented in a 'cordel' (popular booklet) titled "A peleja de Cego Aderaldo e Zé Pretinho." His travels also led him to Pará, seeking refuge from drought, and later to Juazeiro do Norte, where he met Padre Cícero. Throughout his life, he was known for his quick wit and his ability to weave intricate rhymes, becoming a significant figure in Brazilian folk culture.

Cego Aderaldo's legacy extends beyond his performances. He never married but raised 24 adopted children, providing them with education and professions. His artistic contributions were recognized and honored, with a statue erected in Quixadá, Ceará, commemorating his status as a patriarch of Northeastern singers. His influence can also be seen in the works of other artists, such as Baden Powell, who composed a piece titled "O Cego Aderaldo (Nordeste)" in his honor. Cego Aderaldo passed away in Fortaleza on June 29, 1967, leaving behind a rich cultural heritage.
