Biography
Celeste Leal Borges was a Brazilian singer, songwriter, and folklore researcher who was active in the late 1920s and early 1930s. Her work, although not extensive, is a valuable record of a specific period in Brazilian popular music, with an emphasis on genres such as batuque and samba-do-norte. In 1929, her samba-do-norte "Sá querida" was recorded by Olga Praguer Coelho. The following year, she released her first record with Odeon, performing "Sinhá vem cá" (batuque) and "Canção da noite" (canção), both written by her. In total, she recorded 9 records with 16 songs for Odeon, four of which were written by her, including "Sereno eu caio" and "Pega o baião".
In addition to her musical output, Celeste Leal Borges was known for her courage and involvement. According to accounts by a relative, she actively participated in the Constitutionalist Revolution of 1932, which led to her political exile. This facet of her life demonstrates a strong personality engaged with the events of her time, going beyond her artistic work.
The short yet striking career of Celeste Leal Borges places her within the context of early 20th-century Brazilian female composers, a period when women faced significant barriers to having their artistic production recognized. Her work, preserved in records and archives, contributes to the memory of Brazilian popular music and to the appreciation of female artists who, like her, dared to express their talent in a predominantly male environment.
