Biography

Antônio César Camargo Mariano was born in São Paulo on September 19, 1943. Self-taught, he began his artistic career in his teens, standing out as a pianist and joining important instrumental groups such as Sambalanço Trio and Som Três. His unique skill at the piano and innovative arrangements established him as a central figure in the renewal of Brazilian instrumental music and national jazz.

Throughout his career, he worked intensively as an arranger, producer, and musical director alongside major icons of MPB, notably through his long-lasting partnership with Elis Regina. He headed the musical direction of fundamental works, including the historic album Elis & Tom, recorded in 1974 alongside Antônio Carlos Jobim. In addition, he collaborated with renowned artists such as Wilson Simonal, Chico Buarque, Maria Bethânia, Gal Costa, and Ivan Lins.

In the 1980s, he released critically acclaimed albums, such as Samambaia, in partnership with guitarist Hélio Delmiro, and Voz e Suor, with singer Nana Caymmi. In 1994, he moved to the United States, where he continued to collaborate with exponents of international music and MPB. In recognition of his vast contribution to culture, he was honored with the Latin Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2006.
