Biography

Céu da Boca was a Brazilian vocal group formed in 1979, known for their intricate vocal arrangements and engaging stage presence. The ensemble comprised eleven members, including sopranos, contraltos, tenors, and basses, many of whom were part of the Pro-Arte Choir in Rio de Janeiro, under the direction of Maestro Jaques Morelenbaum. This background in choral music heavily influenced their sophisticated vocal harmonies, which they applied to popular Brazilian music.

The group's repertoire was eclectic, featuring works by renowned Brazilian composers such as Ernesto Nazareth, Gilberto Gil, Assis Valente, and Aylton Escobar. Céu da Boca often performed a cappella but was also accompanied by instruments played by their own members, including piano, guitar, bass, and drums. Their unique approach to vocal performance and their often humorous stage attire set them apart in the Brazilian music scene.

Céu da Boca released their self-titled debut album in 1981, which earned them the "Best Vocal Group" award from the Association of Art Critics of São Paulo. They followed this with "Baratotal" in 1982. The group also contributed to albums by prominent artists like César Camargo Mariano, Wagner Tiso, Ivan Lins, Elba Ramalho, and Nara Leão, further solidifying their reputation. Despite their success, several members departed for solo careers in 1984, leading to the group's dissolution.
