Biography

Ricardo de Carvalho Duarte, artistically known as Chacal, was born in Rio de Janeiro on May 24, 1951. A prominent poet and lyricist, he began his literary career in the 1970s, using the mimeograph for the independent circulation of his works, such as his debut book, Muito Prazer, and subsequent publications like Preço da Passagem and América. He was part of important cultural movements and artistic agitation collectives, such as the Nuvem Cigana group alongside names like Bernardo Vilhena and Ronaldo Bastos, in addition to participating in literary initiatives alongside poets like Cacaso and Francisco Alvim.

In addition to his poetry production printed in striking anthologies of national literature, Chacal expanded his work into theater and Brazilian popular music. He wrote plays for prominent theatrical groups of the time, collaborated with members who would form the band Blitz, such as Evandro Mesquita and Patrícia Travassos, and established himself as a lyricist. His poetry also crossed borders and led to developments in international electronic music through partnerships and adaptations that achieved global recognition, such as the song inspired by his poem "Relógio".

Throughout his career, Chacal took over the direction of CEP 20.000 starting in 1990 and published several books of poetry and chronicles, including Comício de Tudo, Letra Elétrika, and Tudo e mais um pouco. His contribution to culture ranged from the happenings of the 1970s in the south zone of Rio to the direction of literary and artistic centers, consolidating a unique trajectory in contemporary Brazilian poetry and maintaining proximity to artists and composers of different generations.
