Biography

Alexandre Magno Abrão, widely known by his stage name Chorão, was a Brazilian singer, songwriter, and poet, most famous for being the lead vocalist and main lyricist of the influential rock band Charlie Brown Jr. Born in São Paulo on April 9, 1970, Chorão's early life was marked by a difficult childhood, including his parents' divorce and financial struggles that led him to drop out of school. He found solace and expression in skateboarding, which he began at age seven, and later in music. His nickname, "Chorão" (meaning "cry-baby" in Portuguese), originated from his childhood emotionality and struggles with skateboarding tricks.

In 1992, Chorão co-founded Charlie Brown Jr. in Santos, São Paulo, alongside Champignon, Marcão Britto, Thiago Castanho, and Renato Pelado. The band became a significant force in Brazilian rock, known for its unique blend of skate punk, rap rock, reggae, and alternative rock. Chorão's lyrics, often introspective and socially conscious, resonated deeply with a generation of Brazilian youth, addressing themes of love, societal challenges, rebellion, and self-expression. Charlie Brown Jr. released ten studio albums and achieved considerable commercial success, selling over five million copies.

Beyond his music career, Chorão was a multifaceted artist. He ventured into filmmaking, writing and co-producing the 2007 film "O Magnata." He also launched his own clothing brand, DO.CE., and established a skatepark in Santos. Despite his artistic achievements and the profound impact he had on Brazilian culture, Chorão battled with drug addiction throughout his life. His struggles ultimately led to his untimely death on March 6, 2013, from a cocaine overdose in São Paulo, at the age of 42. His legacy continues to inspire musicians and fans, cementing his status as an icon of Brazilian rock and youth culture.
