Biography

O Choro Só was a Brazilian musical ensemble formed in 1982, with the objective of promoting and preserving choro, one of the most traditional genres of Brazilian popular music. The group stood out for its dedication to the interpretation of choro classics, in addition to presenting original compositions that dialogued with the rich tradition of the genre. The lineup of O Choro Só allowed for the exploration of the instrumental and harmonic nuances that characterize choro, with arrangements that valued improvisation and the musicians' virtuosity. The ensemble participated in various performances and festivals, contributing to the diffusion of choro to different audiences and regions, and collaborating to keep this important Brazilian cultural heritage alive. The work of O Choro Só is part of the context of a movement to value choro that gained strength from the second half of the 20th century onwards, driven by musicians who sought to rescue and reinterpret the works of masters such as Pixinguinha, Jacob do Bandolim, and Waldir Azevedo. The group, alongside other ensembles and artists of the era, helped consolidate choro as a highly relevant and appealing musical genre, both in Brazil and abroad.
