Biography

Choronas is an all-female Brazilian instrumental music group founded in São Paulo in 1994 by classically trained musicians. The original lineup featured Gabriela Machado on flute, Ana Cláudia César on cavaquinho, Paola Picherzky on guitar, and Roseli Câmara on percussion. Over the years, the group experienced lineup changes, welcoming percussionist Miriam Cápua in 2012 and later flutist and composer Maicira Trevisan in 2015. Known for performing standing up, the ensemble aims to promote and value Brazilian female musicians alongside traditional national rhythms.

Alongside the traditional choro genre, Choronas' repertoire embraces diverse Brazilian musical expressions such as baião, maxixe, and samba. Their discography includes acclaimed independent releases like their 2000 debut album Atraente, 2003's Choronas Convida, 2008's O Brasil Toca Choro, and later projects celebrating their milestone anniversaries such as Choronas - Sampa and Choronas 25+. Their artistic output has also been documented through international tours in countries like Sweden, Portugal, and Peru, as well as performances across various Brazilian capitals.

Throughout their decades-long career, Choronas has shared stages and collaborated with prominent figures and ensembles of Brazilian instrumental music, including Roberto Sion and Grupo Madeira de Vento. Their dedication to preserving the choro tradition while incorporating regional Brazilian idioms places them alongside contemporaries committed to instrumental excellence. They remain an influential voice in modern choro, highlighting the rich heritage of Brazilian popular music.
