Biography

Christiaan Oyens is a multidisciplinary musician, composer, orchestrator, and producer born in Montevideo, Uruguay, to Dutch parents and a Russian grandmother. After spending his childhood in Argentina, his family moved to Brazil in 1973. He began his musical journey playing the drums at age eleven and made his professional debut as a drummer in Rio de Janeiro as a teenager. Influenced by blues and jazz, he later moved to the United States to study at the Musician's Institute, where he performed with renowned artists and studied composition and orchestration under Moacir Santos.

Upon returning to Brazil in 1988, Oyens quickly established himself in the local music scene, playing with prominent acts such as Cazuza, Lulu Santos, and Marina Lima. He formed a long-lasting and fruitful songwriting partnership with singer Zélia Duncan, co-writing major hits like Catedral and Enquanto Durmo. In addition to his work with Duncan, he collaborated as a songwriter and instrumentalist with figures such as Itamar Assumpção and Adriana Calcanhoto, showcasing his versatility across genres like MPB and rock.

As a producer, Oyens has helmed commercially successful and critically acclaimed projects, including the multi-platinum Lulu Santos MTV Acústico and the Latin Grammy-winning album Sol-te by the band Suricato. His contributions to Brazilian music have been recognized with various honors, including APCA awards and the Prêmio TIM. Through his multifaceted career as an instrumentalist, composer, and producer, he remains an influential figure in Brazilian popular and rock music.
