Biography

Claudio Cartier, born Claudio Brandini Cartier in Rio de Janeiro, was a versatile Brazilian artist who stood out as a classical guitarist, arranger, singer, songwriter, visual artist, and cartoonist. Beginning his musical studies in classical guitar with renowned teachers such as Antonio Rebello and Jodacil Damasceno, he soon expanded his musical horizons by participating in the university artistic movement (MAU) in the late 1960s. During his training, he also attended the Villa-Lobos Institute and received valuable guidance from central figures of our culture, such as Radamés Gnattali, in addition to moving with ease through the visual arts.

Throughout his career, Cartier built a solid trajectory as a composer, having his works recorded and popularized by the voices of great MPB interpreters, most notably singer Emílio Santiago. His musical creations marked an era and consolidated fruitful partnerships with fundamental lyricists and composers of the national scene, such as Aldir Blanc and Paulo César Feital. In addition to his solo work and collaborations, such as in the duo Burnier & Cartier, he left behind a rich discography that spanned solo albums and highly relevant collaborative projects.

Besides music, Claudio Cartier maintained a strong presence in the graphic arts, working as a draftsman and cartoonist, including memorable participations in the TV Globo television program Faça humor, não faça guerra. His death in October 2020 ended the journey of a multifaceted creator who knew how to dialogue with Brazilian erudition and popular culture with equal mastery.
