Biography
Clovis Candal is a Brazilian singer born in Guaporé, Rio Grande do Sul, on August 6, 1940. He began his artistic career in the early 1960s, interpreting boleros, calypsos, and other popular rhythms of the era. In 1962, he signed with the Copacabana record label, releasing the calypso "Coração Biruta" and the bolero "Palhaço," both composed by Eleu Salvador, with arrangements by Hector Lagna Fietta's orchestra.
In the same year, he recorded the boleros "Confissão" (by Joaquim Oliver and Genival Melo) and "Sem Querer" (by Álvaro Dalmar and Aires Pastorino). His discography from the 1960s also includes "Marcha da Pipoca" and "Chegou a Hora" (1963), "O Pecador" and "Quem Depois de Mim" (1963), and "Hora Final" and "Desde Aquela Noite" (1963). His greatest success came in 1964 with the Italian ballad "Roberta," composed by Naddeo and Lepore. This song was later included in the 2000 compilation CD "Os Cantores do Rádio – Volume 2" by EMI Music.
Candal's music is characterized by its romantic interpretations of boleros and other Latin rhythms. While specific details about his later career are less documented, his inclusion in the "Os Cantores do Rádio" compilation indicates his lasting presence in Brazilian popular music, particularly within the seresta genre.
