Biography

Clóvis Pereira was a renowned Brazilian composer, arranger, pianist, and conductor born in Caruaru, Pernambuco. He immersed himself in music from a young age, influenced by his father, a clarinetist, and later pursued formal training at the Conservatório Pernambucano de Música and studied harmony and orchestration under the guidance of maestro Guerra Peixe. His rich body of work deeply integrates traditional northeastern Brazilian rhythms such as frevos, maracatus, and caboclinhos into classical concert formats, notably aligning himself with the aesthetic ideals of the Movimento Armorial at the invitation of Ariano Suassuna.

Throughout his illustrious career, Pereira held prominent academic and artistic positions, including teaching at the Federal Universities of Paraíba and Pernambuco and directing the Conservatório Pernambucano de Música. As a conductor, he led ensembles internationally, famously representing Brazil at the Fourth International Choir Festival in the United States with the Coral Universitário da Paraíba. His symphonic and choral compositions, such as Terra Brasilis and the Grande missa nordestina, cemented his legacy as a pillar of Brazilian classical and regional music.
