Biography

O Coletivo Choro na Rua is a Brazilian musical group formed in December 2016 in Rio de Janeiro. Its creation came about spontaneously from a choro jam session held during the launch of a biography about musicians Zé da Velha and Silvério Pontes. The initial idea was a performance in an enclosed space, but the large public turnout led the musicians to move the session to the street, where the event became a success and gave rise to the collective.

The main objective of Coletivo Choro na Rua is the popularization of choro, seeking to rescue the original character of the genre, which historically was played in public spaces such as streets, squares, and backyards. The group argues that choro should be performed with joy, to be danced to and appreciated, and that the "musical conversation" among the instrumentalists, with technical mastery and human harmony, is a fundamental ingredient for a good choro session.

The collective performs in various public locations in Rio de Janeiro and other cities, featuring both regular and guest musicians, which gives flexibility to its lineup. Among the names frequently associated with the group are Silvério Pontes, Zé da Velha, Daniela Spielmann, Dudu Oliveira, Rogério Caetano, Henrique Cazes, among others. In 2023, they released the album "Choro na rua: obrigado Zé da Velha!" and, in 2024, they were awarded at the Brazilian Music Award (Prêmio da Música Brasileira) as Best Instrumental Group and Best Breakthrough Album.
