Biography

Colombo Costa Pinto, widely known by his pseudonym Colombo, was a Brazilian composer and singer born in Bahia on October 12, 1926. He passed away in Rio de Janeiro on November 17, 2004. Colombo was a significant figure in the samba scene, particularly for his contributions to the Portela samba school's composer's wing. He was also a founding member of the samba group Trio ABC da Portela in the 1960s.

Migrating to Rio de Janeiro in 1936, Colombo settled in the Oswaldo Cruz neighborhood, where he became immersed in the Portela community, interacting with notable figures like Paulo da Portela and Natal da Portela. His career as a composer for the school began in the 1940s. In 1966, he co-founded Trio ABC da Portela with Noca da Portela and Picolino da Portela. The trio gained media attention, appearing on television programs and performing in Rio de Janeiro's theaters.

The Trio ABC da Portela achieved recognition, notably in 1967, when their song "Portela Querida" reached the finals of the II Carnaval Music Contest, earning Elza Soares the Golden Carmen Miranda Trophy. The group disbanded in the 1970s due to lineup changes. Colombo's legacy is cemented through his compositions and his role in popularizing samba music, especially within the context of the Portela samba school.
