Biography

O Compasso da Vila is a traditional samba group formed in 1991 in Rio de Janeiro. The group stands out for its repertoire that blends samba de terreiro, partido alto, syncopated samba, and choro, engaging with new generations of samba artists and composers. Composed of Jair Corrêa (tambourine and vocals), Caju (Paulo Roberto Motta – tantan and vocals), PC (Paulo Cesar Corrêa – tantan and vocals), Ives (Antônio Ives Anselmo de Oliveira – banjo and vocals), Álvaro (Álvaro Lúcio Gomes de Campos – acoustic guitar and vocals), and Itamar (cavaquinho and vocals), O Compasso da Vila has established itself in the Rio de Janeiro music scene.

The group's members have rich and varied backgrounds. Jair Corrêa, for example, has experience from the "golden age of radio" and has played with artists such as Waldir Azevedo and Jacob do Bandolim. Caju, who started in the children's drum corps of the Unidos de Vila Isabel Samba School, has participated in projects with João Nogueira, Nei Lopes, and Dona Ivone Lara. Paulo César Corrêa is a composer and percussionist who participated in the CD "Butiquim do Martinho" by Martinho da Vila. Ives is a composer and instrumentalist, active in samba school composer sections and as a lead cavaquinho player in carnival parades. Álvaro, a classically trained acoustic guitar player, studied at the Villa-Lobos School of Music, and Itamar is recognized as one of the best cavaquinho players in Rio de Janeiro.

O Compasso da Vila is known for their performances in theaters, nightclubs, and for hosting the Sunday samba circle at "Butiquim do Martinho" in Vila Isabel, a venue that welcomes illustrious guests and has become a meeting point for Rio samba. The group participated in the release show of Martinho da Vila's CD "Coisas de Deus" at Canecão, and recorded the tracks "Sintonia do amor" and "Zé Rosa" on the 1997 CD "Butiquim do Martinho". The song "Sintonia do amor" achieved great success on samba and pagode radio stations throughout the country.
