Biography

Maria Christina Buarque de Hollanda was born in São Paulo on December 23, 1950, part of a family of strong artistic and intellectual expression as the daughter of Sérgio Buarque de Holanda and sister of Chico Buarque, Miúcha, and Ana de Hollanda. Her journey in music began early, at the age of sixteen, when she participated in the album Onze Sambas e uma Capoeira interpreting the track "Chorava no Meio da Rua", a work by composer Paulo Vanzolini. Throughout her career, she established herself not only as a singer and songwriter, but also as a respected musical researcher dedicated to the preservation of traditional Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo samba.

In 1974, she released her first solo album, which brought her national prominence by recording the song "Quantas Lágrimas", a classic by Manaceia. For over five decades of activity, she gave voice to composers often forgotten by the mainstream industry, engaging with fundamental names such as Cartola, Candeia, and Monarco, in addition to collaborating with artists like Mauro Duarte. Her work was decisive for the rescue of historical repertoires and for the cultural revitalization of the Lapa neighborhood, sharing her personal collection with new generations of musicians until her passing on April 20, 2025, in Rio de Janeiro.
