Biography

Maria Cristina Mel de Almeida Costa, known artistically as Cristina Mel, was born in Rio de Janeiro on March 10, 1964. With a degree in literature and studies in English and Spanish, she faced a adolescence marked by family hardships before converting to Protestantism at the age of sixteen. She began her musical journey singing in the choir of the Tauá Baptist Church in her hometown, until she was discovered by Natan Brito and Isaías Costa, who made the recording of her first album, Tá Decidido, possible. Throughout decades of a career in contemporary Christian music, she established herself as one of the top-selling recording artists and a record-holder for awards at the Troféu Talento, in addition to accumulating Latin Grammy nominations.

Throughout her career, Cristina Mel has been part of several major labels, such as Line Records, MK Music, and Sony Music, releasing dozens of albums aimed at both adult and children's audiences. Her discography features striking works such as As Canções da Minha Vida - 15 anos ao vivo and the project in partnership with Os Vegetais. Over the course of her journey, she has collaborated with various prominent names in national gospel music, such as Soraya Moraes, Paulo César Baruk, Eyshila, and Leandro Borges.

In addition to her intense phonographic production and international collaborations, the artist expanded her work into projects aimed at children and youth and even paid tribute to icons of evangelical music, such as the late Denise Cerqueira. Remaining active for over thirty years, she has celebrated commemorative dates with releases such as the album Olhe Para a Cruz. Alongside her artistic career, she has involved herself in social and political agendas, participating in major industry events and running for public office.
