Biography

Cyva Ribeiro de Sá Leite, known mononymously as Cyva, was a prominent Brazilian singer and a founding member of the influential vocal group Quarteto em Cy. Born in Ibirataia, Bahia, on March 18, 1938, Cyva, along with her sisters Cynara, Cybele, and Cylene, formed the core of the quartet, which would become one of Brazil's most enduring and celebrated musical ensembles.

Her musical journey began early, participating in radio programs in Salvador, Bahia, and later pursuing a degree in Letters. In 1962, she moved to Rio de Janeiro, where she continued her studies and began her professional singing career. It was in Rio that she met the legendary poet Vinicius de Moraes, who, along with Carlos Lyra, christened the sisters "Quarteto em Cy." The group's debut album was the soundtrack for the film "Sol Sobre Lama" in 1964, marking the beginning of a prolific career that spanned decades and left an indelible mark on Brazilian popular music.

Throughout her career, Cyva was a constant presence in the Quarteto em Cy, participating in all its formations until her passing on October 22, 2023. Her distinctive voice and her dedication to the group's intricate harmonies contributed significantly to their success in genres like MPB, samba, and bossa nova. She also lent her talents to musical direction for Disney films dubbed into Portuguese, showcasing her versatility. Cyva's legacy is intertwined with the rich history of Brazilian music, celebrated for her contributions as a vocalist, arranger, and as a foundational pillar of the Quarteto em Cy.
