Biography

Daniela Mercuri de Almeida Verçosa, globally renowned as the "Queen of Axé", was born in Salvador and began her artistic journey through dance, studying classical ballet and Afro dances since childhood. Her transition to professional singing occurred in her adolescence, at fifteen, inspired by the voice of Elis Regina. Before breaking out in her solo career, Daniela performed in bars in Salvador, was a backing vocalist for singer Gilberto Gil, and led the group Companhia Clic.

Definitive consecration came in the early 1990s with the release of the album "O Canto da Cidade". The record not only sold millions of copies but was the main factor responsible for taking the axé music genre to the level of a national and international phenomenon. Over the years, the artist has demonstrated great versatility by fusing traditional Bahian rhythms with electronic music and elements of MPB, collaborating with names such as Carlinhos Brown and Margareth Menezes.

In addition to her musical relevance, Daniela is a central figure in Brazilian social activism. A UNICEF ambassador and fervent defender of LGBT+ rights and the fight against racism, she uses her platform to promote equality. In her personal life, she is married to journalist Malu Verçosa, with whom she published a book recounting their story of love and resistance.
