Biography

Edson Fagundes, artistically known as Dedé da Portela, was a renowned Brazilian singer and songwriter, born in São Paulo on May 28, 1939. His musical career was intrinsically linked to the Portela Samba School, where he became one of its most important musicians. Dedé joined the association's Composer Wing and, for a decade, worked as a lead samba singer, lending his voice and passion to the parades that thrilled the public.

Throughout his career, Dedé da Portela collaborated with several artists and composed memorable sambas. His most prolific partnership was with Norival Reis, with whom he created the plot "Contos de Areia" in 1984, the year Portela was crowned carnival champion. Other notable compositions include "Festa da Aclamação" and "Senhora Rezadeira", which echoed in recordings by major names in Brazilian popular music such as Alcione, Beth Carvalho and Leci Brandão.

Dedé da Portela passed away on February 18, 2003, in Nova Iguaçu, Rio de Janeiro, a city where he resided for many years. His passing left a void in samba, but his legacy remains alive through his compositions and the tribute he received during his lifetime, with a bust installed in the Metrópole neighborhood, in Nova Iguaçu. His work continues to be celebrated by samba lovers and for his invaluable contribution to Brazilian music.
