Biography

The Department of Music (CMU) at the University of São Paulo (USP) was established in March 1971, with its headquarters in the city of São Paulo. Since its inception, the undergraduate program has focused on refining creative, technical, theoretical, and reflective skills. It is designed for musicians aspiring to careers in creation and performance, as well as in academia, encompassing musical research, teaching, creation, and interpretation.

The CMU offers Licentiate and Bachelor's degrees in Music, with the latter including specializations in Voice and Opera, Composition, Conducting, and Instrumental Performance. The instrumental specializations cover various areas such as strings, winds, keyboards, and percussion. The curriculum begins with fundamental courses common to all areas, including Harmony, Counterpoint, Music History, and Music Perception, aiming to enhance theoretical knowledge and develop perceptual skills.

The department fosters an environment of shared experiences among singers, instrumentalists, composers, conductors, music educators, and researchers. It organizes public musical performances that provide stage experience for students and promote interaction with other USP departments and the general public. The CMU is equipped with study rooms, percussion rooms, an auditorium, a recording studio, and classrooms, all furnished with pianos and multimedia technology. Additionally, it houses eight laboratories for practical student experiences, complementing regular coursework. Students can also enrich their education with elective courses from any USP unit, exploring subjects of interest across humanities, sciences, and biology. The faculty comprises distinguished musicians and researchers, contributing to the formation of professionals who significantly impact Brazil's cultural, artistic, and musical landscape.
