Biography

Dercy Gonçalves, artistic name of Dolores Gonçalves Costa, was born in Santa Maria Madalena, Rio de Janeiro, in 1907. She began her artistic trajectory by running away from home in her youth to join circus and traveling theater companies, later establishing herself as one of the greatest stars of revue theater and Brazilian cinema, especially in the chanchada genre. Known for her irreverent style, frequent use of improvised humor, and outspokenness, she broke taboos and marked the country's cultural history, having even been recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records for her long career on stage.

Over the decades, Dercy successfully transitioned between theater, cinema, and television, participating in high-ratings variety shows and soap operas. She closely worked with various important names in Brazilian television and faced periods of heavy censorship during the military dictatorship, such as on her TV Globo show. Her artistic versatility and striking personality kept her relevant for generations, culminating in memorable tributes, such as her historic parade with the Unidos do Viradouro samba school and her performances in soap operas and theatrical plays.

The artist passed away in July 2008 at the age of 101, leaving an indelible legacy in Brazilian comedy and performing arts. Her life and work were immortalized in biographies and miniseries that recall her audacity and authenticity. Throughout her journey, Dercy performed and lived alongside various personalities of national culture, such as Bibi Ferreira and Dina Sfat, establishing herself as a true popular icon of the country.
